The first series of the regular season in the Italian Serie A1 is close to the end and caused a big upset right before Christmas. Here the dream team of record champion Pro Recco fall to RN Savona, when head coach Giuseppe “Pino” Porzio´s player even gave a lead by three goals at halftime away. Recco´s traditional Ligurian rival did not only level the score after the changing of sides, but also gained a 9-8 (2-3, 1-3, 4-1, 2-1) victory in the final period. Three more matches of game day 9 in Italy ended with a tie.

Italian national broadcaster RAI had chosen this match as Friday night TV game, and they were right. Federico Mistrangelo, one of numerous Italian internationals in a match with many top players and the son of Savona head coach Claudio Mistrangelo, scored the winning goal two minutes before the final whistle. Recco defended the lead by a 10-1-0 record and 24 points after game day 9, followed by Savona (23) and Leonessa Brescia (23).

All three teams are the current leaders of the table; their positions were strengthened by three more ties of the other teams. Even the fourth-ranked team lost ground, when Latina PN, a club from the Greater Rome Region, achieved a 5-5 tie against former European Cup winner RN Florentina. Former powerhouse CN Posillipo had the same problem, when eleventh-ranked RN Sori gained an 8-8 draw against the famous club from Naples.
