The last two quarter-final berths in the current Euro-League competition were decided by close encounters in favour of the home teams. 2006 winner Jug “Croatia Osiguranje” Dubrovnik from Croatia achieved their necessary result by an 11-11 tie against head-to-head rival “Teva” Vasas-Plaket Budapest from Hungary to finish second in the difficult matches of Group B. In the matches of Group D, Hungary´s number two ZF Eger made it top eight for the first time in history by an 11-8 against Russia´s 2007 LEN Trophy winner Sintez Kasan.

The result in Eger was still 7-7 tie before the last period and this result would have been enough to go through for the guests from Russia. Finally, five goals by three-Olympic champion Peter Biros made the difference between both teams and a top eight-ranking. Once more the Russian clubs will be absent from the play-offs of the most important competition in European club waterpolo; only Shturm 2002 Chekhov finished fourth in 2004, when the competition formula was applied for the first time.

A surprising result was achieved in the head-to-head duel for the first place in Group A when Spanish champion CN Atlètic Barceloneta gained a 9-8 victory at Igalo, Montenegro against home team PVK Jadran CBK Herceg Novi. After years of missed qualifications for the play-offs, head coach Santi Fernandez´s players even finished first in their pool play. They lost only one match; this happened to the last-ranked team of VK Vojvodina Novi Sad from Serbia.
