Australia´s four-times National Water Polo League champions Longmont Fremantle Marlins scored 18 goals and still lost in a remarkable women´s match at Musgrave Park in Brisbane last night. Neither team was willing to give up its “unbeaten” status but reigning champions VICI Brisbane Barracudas came back from two goals down to win 19-18 with three goals in the final 76 seconds, including a Jane Moran clincher with five seconds remaining.
It was nothing short of exhilarating with both teams having their share of the lead in a game where the scores were levelled eight times. However, Fremantle four times went two up in the final quarter until the implosion that saw Ash Southern scored her third goal of the period with a penalty conversion, skipper Mel Rippon claim her fourth on action and Moran´s sealer. Glencora Ralph scored four of her six goals for Fremantle before halftime when the Marlins led 9-7. Brisbane coach Fabio Pavanello said of the final minute: ““A few of our girls stepped up and went on all-out attack and played like we should be playing all the time. “We pushed it out like a quality team should do. We kept pushing and took a couple of risky opportunities at goal and they paid off.”
The men´s game was just as exciting with the visiting Fremantle Mariners finishing on top 9-8 after leading by three in the final minutes. Damien Hicks lifted the Barracudas to within one against the five-time champions with just nine seconds left on the clock in a game where there was parity in the middle segment before Fremantle drew away.
