KFC Breakers old stager Daniel Marsden did his best to secure victory for his team over Drummoyne Devils in a National Water Polo League encounter at Drummoyne Pool last night. The Barcelona 1992 and Sydney 2000 Olympian, who is in his 40th year, brought the Breakers to within one goal with a minute remaining for his third of the match but it was to no avail as last year´s NWPL runners-up Devils held out for an 8-7 victory. The game broke the Devils´ way in the third period, going from 4-4 at halftime to 7-5.
In the women´s encounter, the star-studded Breakers finished 9-7 ahead with Drummoyne relying heavily on United States international Lauren Silver, who scored an impressive six goals. Drummoyne was two down in the second quarter but led the game 7-5 well into the final quarter before four goals in less than four minutes saw the resurgent Breakers winning. International Sophie Smith scored four goals for the Breakers while former UWA Torpedoes star Gemma Hadley, a member of the 2007 silver-medal-winning world championship team, grabbed two more on debut for her new club. Results: Men: Sydney: Drummoyne Devils 8 (M Emery, S Avallone 3, T Martin 2) KFC Breakers 7 (D Marsden 3, D Streets, S Roberston 2). Women: Sydney: KFC Breakers 9 (S Smith 4, G Hadley 2, N McCarthy, J Stuhmcke, B Knox) Drummoyne Devils 7 (L Silver 6, N Cuffe).
