In Australia the Balmain Tigers women had a horror night at the office, losing 12-7 to KFC Queensland Breakers in a National Water Polo League match at Sydney´s Dawn Fraser Pool yesterday. The Tigers, runners-up to VICI Brisbane Barracudas last year, were down by a huge 5-1 in the first quarter and only twice later managed to get within three of the rampant Breakers
Sydney Olympic champion Naomi McCarthy (35) turned back the clock with a devastating four goals, backed up with a fine performance by Athens Olympian Jodie Stuhmcke. The victory reversed Wednesday´s 8-7 result in favour of Balmain. Balmain coach Phillip Bower said it was an “appalling” defensive effort by his team. “Our attack equalled our defence with three from 13 extra-man attacks and one missed penalty (goal attempt) and our general play was selfish.” Positions were reversed in the men´s game as well with Balmain improving on Wednesday´s 8-7 loss to post a 7-6 victory over the Breakers. Balmain had the game in the bag at three-quarter time with a 6-3 lead, thanks to a standout performance by multiple NWPL MVP Gavin Woods. Sydney University Lions women turned a 4-all halftime scoreline into an 8-6 victory, thanks to four goals from Keesja Gofers. Victorian Tigers gained their first two wins in Perth with a 13-3 men´s victory and a 13-5 women´s win over UWA Torpedoes.
New signing Sam McGregor pounded the Torpedoes goal with six successes with a further four coming from Unite States Olympic silver medallist Brian Alexander. Emma Jo Grahame and Elise Rossato led the Victorian charge with three goals each.
