In Australia two of the best teams in the history of the women´s National Water Polo League battled to a 10-all draw at the Dawn Fraser Pool here at Sydney last night. Perennial grand finalists Balmain Tigers and four-times champions Longmont Fremantle Marlins were gridlocked six times and the 10-10 score could not be bettered in the final four minutes.

There wasn´t much air between the teams except when Fremantle went 2-0 up and when Balmain held an 8-6 margin at the third break. Balmain went to 9-7 and 10-9 but Fremantle was equal to the task with Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Gemma Beadsworth grabbing the equaliser.

Internationals proved the difference with Fremantle´s 1995 World Cup champion Sharan Wheelock scoring three, along with Balmain´s 2000 Olympic champion Taryn Woods and United States senior international Juliet Moss.

Fremantle Mariners men held off a fast-finishing Balmain 8-7 after being 8-5 ahead.
Balmain led 4-2 at the quarter but Fremantle levelled at 5-all just before halftime and went two up after three periods. Across town, Victorian Tigers men scuttled Cronulla 18-8 with Sam McGregor nailing six goals at the Sutherland Leisure Centre. Cronulla´s former United States junior Frank Reynolds ran rampant in the final quarter with four goals from his five tally.
