KFC Breakers gain two exciting NWPL draws with Fremantle

In Australia the KFC Queensland Breakers men found the first chink in Fremantle Mariners´ armour when the two National Water Polo League contenders drew their match at the Valley Pool at Brisbane last night. The reigning champion Mariners withstood a fierce two-game assault by Victorian Tigers last week, only to find themselves a goal down heading into the final quarter last night.

Nick Redbond claimed the equaliser in just the second attack of the final period but neither team could break the deadlock in the final seven minutes. The low-scoring result was due mainly to the Olympian efforts of the goalkeepers - KFC´s Raf Sterk and Fremantle´s James Stanton - who have five Olympic appearances between them. Sterk pipped Stanton as the player of the match and staved off Fremantle´s strong centre-forward style game, which was missing regular captain Jamie Beadsworth.

Earlier, KFC Breakers women held Longmont Fremantle Marlins to an exciting 9-all draw in the clash between what easily could be the grand finalists. Four-time champion Fremantle went to a 2-0 lead early but KFC had the halftime lead at 5-4. Fremantle levelled at the final break and twice went into the lead in the final quarter before Beijing Olympics all star player Bronwen Knox squared the game at just over three minutes remaining. Fremantle´s Gemma Beadsworth dominated at centre forward while Sarah Mills and Sophie Smith stood out for the Breakers. The pressure will continue for Fremantle with clashes against VICI Brisbane Barracudas tonight before the return matches with the Breakers tomorrow.
